All right, let's talk about batteries as more time goes by uh. These pouch cells are becoming more and more popular, there's more and more of these hidden. The uh supply chains that i am and that i work in right, and so these come from lg lg's, a huge manufacturer of cells. They all kinds of car manufacturers use them right, and so some of them are good.
Some of them are not as good but there's come in different shapes and sizes right and if you search these numbers, sometimes you can find out which car manufacturer and which car they came from. Now, i'm not at liberty to say where these come from, but if you're good with googling, then yeah you might just find where they come from right and they're. Definitely not from the recall manufacturers that have been putting on. But you know, um they're from a car.
That's currently in production and it's a really good car and they are pretty good. So we don't know why these were dismantled. These were already put into modules, and then they were very carefully taken out of modules, and so they still have the tabs or at least half of the tab. And so uh we're going to be doing a bunch of testing, because these are available, they're floating around and so we're gon na do something some testings.
As you know, some of these uh packs. These packs are really good, like this is a 50 amp hour version of the battery, and so as such, when this weight and this size, the gravimetric energy density, is really good uh, it comes out to be about 237 watt hours per kilogram. This is better. This is higher density than tesla put in their in their tesla modules right and so of course.
Yes, this is a raw cell once you put it into a box or whatever there probably is about the equivalent to what the tesla's used, but you know, of course we can do whatever we want with these, and, of course, if you work with these before you Know that they're kind of tough to put to work with, because one of the tabs is aluminum, while the other one is copper. What i did here is set up a little rig and i am going back to my trusted way of putting cells um. What are the pouch cells together and is that by using the little eyelids um, these are just eyelets that go on your shoes or whatever or fabric, or these are uh i'll link down the the tool that i use. You can buy this stuff and amazon uh anywhere really and they make these eyelets out of bronze and so what they do is they apply a lot of pressure.
This way, which then makes the the tabs attach here with a lot of pressure around there right. So i these are: these batteries are a power dense battery, so they can push probably 5c at minimum, so 5 times 5, that's 25, so probably 250 amps uh, probably capable cells right. I don't know how good this connection is going to be, but that's why i have set this little rig right here: um, although these cables are 10 gauge cables and there's only two of them. Let's see, i just want to push this uh 3000 watts right here. So i think about maybe 150 amps uh, and i am also testing this thing where i want to test out. If i can put two pcbs together, bend the tabs and then just put screws so that they can compress and touch with like high uh area of exposed traces in there right, and so i just wan na, take the thermal camera and just look at all this Stuff and see how hot it gets, and if this is a thing that we can build these cells into modules, because if not, if we can't do this, then even if these cells are, they have good capacity and still a good life in them. Then they're kind of useless, right and they're only useful if we can put them in uh modules and use them are able to use them as something else. Here's where i was doing the uh, the uh calculations right so tesla seems to be about 201 hours per kilogram on their tesla modules, but these are 237, so at least 371 hours more dense than the tesla okay.
So, let's, let's fire this guy up, put some loads in here, get the thermal camera. We're gon na see how this behaves and if this is a thing that we can do all right. Let's start this test again: five amps, it's the one on the tape there. Oh, let me see if that's no, because this one is also dirty 35c.
Okay, so there seems to be quite a bit of resistance. There seems to be a hot spot, all right and that's how it's looking at right. Now, those are 37. Those are definitely hot spots there, so those two uh connections are not as good as the rest of them see.
The other ones are less they're at 30.. Can we fix that? Let's increase the power all right, so here we go thus climbing that's 60 amps uh. 62 amps, that's what we're pulling and that one seems to be the bad one and then on the other side it seems to be that one right there 40 degrees and then the other ones are cool, including this. This is cool, so i wonder why we fix it.
Let's try to fix it all right, so we essentially just uh squeeze those a little bit more. Let's see if 30 50 63 - let's see okay, so now we're at 60 amps again and that's even see - that's 32 that's 33 and that's 32 and really the last one there with the pcb. That seems to be the that seems to be the coolest one. So maybe that is the winning one right there when we use screws to screw and sandwich two pcb boards on that tab right there, it seems to be cooler, so there's seems to be better conductivity on that than that.
Then the eyelids on the other side. Now we're back see 32 see it just took a little bit more pinch it in there. There we go and same thing on this side. The pcb sandwich the two pcb sandwich in the thing, the tab there it seems to be better.
37. 36. The one in the middle is doing the best at 33.. Let's try 100 amps.
Well, that's all this should do 82 amps. Let's look at 82 amps! Okay! So now we just did 82 amps. Let's see how hot those get 38.. That's at 40 over there! That connection there's a bit weak. I got to uh check it out 38 on that one. At this point now uh. I guess now we're just gon na check for capacity when this gets to 50 amps we're going to come and measure the voltage on cells and if they are within in good voltage, that means they're. They have full capacity all right.
So at this point we got 56 percent 55 amp hours left on the battery, actually no 5 amp hours left in the battery we've taken out 45 amp hours and uh we're drawing 92 amps right now right. So one of the things that i wanted to show here is that look at that that battery cells themselves are hot now, whoo 62 c's. Okay, so would it would require yeah, that's hot. These are 48.
The cells are 45 degrees. Okay, so the cells are warm yeah, but we're so close, five more amp hours and the voltage is still pretty good, 3.3 volts on most of them, yeah and all of them. So, there's very little variance right now on them all right: 50 amp hours, lighten the load, let's see where the cells are resting. 3.5.
3.51. 3.51. 3.54. 3.55.
3.5. 3.54. Wow. These batteries have full capacity, so we're gon na put the load back on just a tiny bit and then we'll see how much we can get out of these batteries.
That's why i reset it so the alarm would go off so remember. We have 50 amp hours. So whatever else comes out of here is above the 50 amp, so so all right here we go the first cell to hit 3.06, so it looks like we've reached the bottom of the smallest cell. So there we go.
Let's go look at the numbers now all right. Let's look at the results here. Okay, so i bought these as 50 m power, uh cells, but it turns out these are not 15 powers. These are more like 70 amp hours.
Maybe that is the reason why this is e 71. Maybe 71 amp hours is the nominal on these right. So i just got a random uh set of seven of these cells. Put them together and then did this thing and uh the smallest one so see.
Six of them still have more capacity because the voltage is resting at three point. Three still so, then the other one went down to three uh three point: two right and then the smallest one went just hit three volts right, and so this is over. That's the smallest is there is at 67 amp hours, and so, if that's true, these weight exactly one kilogram. And so, if you do the math here, 67 amp hours times 3.7 voltage number voltage right, equals 247.9, so 248 watt hours per kilogram, because this is one right because so they're, probably it's it's safe to say that these are 250 watt hour per kilogram cells, because Uh six out of the seven here have more than 67 so likely they have close to 70 amp hours, which makes this uh 200 closer to 251 hours right.
So that is the capacity wow. That's good news, that's better than i thought i was getting. I thought i was getting 50 amp hours here, but it's more like 70 amp hours um. Now, let's look at the power. According to the internet, uh diy, electric car forum.com right um on their original purpose on their original car, the on hard accelerations. These will see more than 650 amps right and they're, grouped in four p, so so four of these in parallel, and so that means each one of these ones on heart acceleration for about three seconds three to five seconds or something like that, they will see uh Up to a hundred and sixty uh, seven amps, and so the max that we were able to load them here on this test was about 90 amps, and these were getting a little bit hot right these things. So i think if you want to do and use them to the max, i would suggest putting like a third one in here. Maybe i'll do that for a future video where i do put a third one in here and then i re do this test and see if these are lower, but the cells themselves got warm uh, probably probably yeah, probably warm so at 150 amps well.
But, of course, that's burst only acceleration, probably i want to say continuous, is probably like 100 amps right and that's due based on the temperature. Now these on the original car were probably uh assembled in a way that they had either uh a pad. Well, i've probably a cooling thing: that's what this uh glue comes from, so that what they do is they put an aluminum, an aluminium uh plate here, and then they cool it from the sides all right, and so maybe that's how these were cooled. And so, if you're gon na use them just keep that in mind that if you're not going to cool them this way then yeah - you probably don't want to go above, like 80 uh amps right, continuous um, because then they will they will get really hot uh.
More, you know, hotter than you want to get these cells, but these are they perform really good for being a random set uh out of the whole batch right, uh yeah they're, pretty consistent. I think maybe, like three amp hour difference between probably the biggest one and the smallest one. So you also have to keep that in mind that if you're gon na build uh modules using these, then you have to kinda either test them or you know you just basically uh build your system to only use like you know, 65 amp hours, and that way You know that they're all bigger than 65 amps and then you know you're going to stop at 65. You you top balance them right and then uh at the bottom.
Basically they they stop before you know, i don't know 3.3 volts or something you know, and so that would be one way to build with these and then stay in the safe zone so that you don't kill any of them because they're they vary in sizes. Right now: okay, let's talk about pricing; these are selling on our website right now for a hundred and seven dollars per seven cells right, and so, if you multiply that it's about 1.7 kilowatt hours uh of battery uh, if you divide that by that, then it comes Down to 62.9, so about 63 dollars a kilowatt hour. These are really really good cells. You know automotive quality cells that are already out of the modules, which is i mean it's a good thing, but it's also a bad thing, because you want modules, so you have to build your own modules, but if you're looking to do an electric car yeah, i Want to say these: are it that's to 3 a kilo an hour man? They can't. You can't beat that right and there's plenty of them. I mean there's a lot of them, so that means you can build up a big electric vehicle with these and so yeah. These are the first time that we get uh automotive, uh, spec, car of batteries right and uh they're. They just come like this.
It's weird: they put so much work into taking them out of the modules which is kind of sad, but at the same time maybe it's a good thing, because that's why we can get them for super cheap and you just you just have to build them into Modules and i'm gon na keep looking into ways of building this into modules. I didn't know these were this good, so now that i know i'm like okay now it it actually makes sense to uh, spend some time with these and then build some modules with these. Definitely for storage! These are you know. These are uh over specced.
You definitely could do that with the eyelets and stuff, and then you know if you're, just gon na load them with like one c or something like 70 amps it'll be fine, right, uh and so yeah. Definitely these are good cells. So there you go stay tuned in the future for more projects with these batteries, but we have a lot of them, so they're gon na be there and uh we'll put a link in the description. This video, thanks for watching we'll, see you guys on the next video bye.
