I'm going to do a motorcycle using a golf cart motor and a cvt and as many batteris I can shove in it.
Hello from 2020 everything is much cheaper now.
i was hoping to learn to diy ev
3 years later used Nissan leafs are going for $5000-$8000. What about just taking that vehicle and swapping everything over to any chassis you want. All diy of course.
Appreciate the straight forward info, def cost prohibitive
I see a lot of discouragement from big youtubers who seem to have vested interests in keeping the DIY EV sphere as an exclusive club. If you want to build your own Tesla-spec car, obviously its going to cost more than buying a mass produced Tesla, but contrary to what they would have you believe, there are a whole spectrum of cheap and realistic outcomes you can aim for. Overlander.tv(YT) had a video about an Australian guy and his little $5000 Daihatsu conversion, there are others making small projects that use cheap forklift motors, $1000 shells and a whole range of battery techs from cheap and primitive to Tesla cells. None of it is that hard to achieve for a hobbyist.
Hi Jehu: I thought I saw one of your videos where you offered a monthly subscription where you would answer email questions. Do you still have that deal?
I'm sure someone will contest my math, but I was thinking if we use the IRS-deduction number of $.50/mile, then most people spend at least $5,000 for every 10,000 miles they drive, not counting the cost of buying the car or major repairs. If an EV conversion can cut the cost per mile, then investing in good batteries would eventually be cheaper in the long run… just a bigger up-front cost…. but I wonder how much recharging an EV every night adds to the average home's electric bill?
EV cars are a very good idea, one problem is having enough electricity to power and charge everything. In CA we are asked to cut back our home use, even the water company desalting plant is asked to shut down for a few hours a week during the hot summer.
You can now buy a Used Tesla Model S for under 30k
i have a new formula for you. it is one ebike battery 48 volts one ebike motor 48 volts. two battery management systems. one connected two the other with only one to two power wire from the first. then loader alternator and hydraulic motor. estimated to go 22000 miles if you one 120 motor power by a 120 stator and rotor from the original circuit above. good luck and figure it out it takes about two minutes to make it work if you already made one.
what a downer, but don't forget to subscribe
If you want a good balance of range vs cost of the battery, also consider buying the 18650 cells and build your own battery pack. 4000 sanyo cells (at 12.6 wh each) would give you a tesla equivalent 50.4 kwh. Depending where you source could be only $12-15k
Just an update for anyone who cares. The 5k Tesla batteries in the link are now $1,300.
Books on making your own battery.
