lmao, when the dogs were getting it on

I was looking forward to you testing those laptop battery packs you created. Keeps us posted.

Some other questions I had if you or others have a chance to answer.

    1. What was the best device option for charging 18650 batteries? Revolectrix Powerlab 6 or Imax B6 or other ( I own a Ev-Peak ecube C4 80w charger )

    2. What was the best device option for testing battery capacity? Revolectrix Powerlab 6 or Imax B6 or other

    3. What are the recommended battery cell capacity (mAh) ranges you matched together to make your 18650 battery packs / Does it matter?

    4. Can you mix battery brands with the near or close battery capacity?

I would assume that you would like to keep cells that have close to the same capacity together. Example: 1900mAh cells matched with batteries upto 2800mAh Not 1200 mAh battery cells matched with 2400mAh cells

I believe that these are some great questions that I and some others that following you would want to know. I myself am building the same packs you have made with the used 18650 laptop batteries for my 1978 VW Westfalia in Toronto Ontario Canada. If I don't go the route of EV for my VW Bus I will make a powerwall.

    Cheers Jehu

    Keep up the good work!

Hi Jehu, are you running a BMS with the packs in your bus?

lol I love how the camera fell at the beginning haha What program do you use to edit your video's? Also, I used a massive amount of lithium batteries and the really good one's never drift. The Panasonic 18650B don't drift one bit, the voltage is always dead on and very reliable. You get what you pay for these day's.

Do you know if the Tesla battery packs have a balancing system? It only takes a couple of MOSFets switching the charge and a microcontroller to build one, and the Tesla modules have got a pretty big PCB on them.
8 millivolts is a ridiculously low drift for it to be a "dumb" pack. Let alone for 2 years. Li-poly packs (such as those used in RC planes/helis) drift a damn lot. I haven't personally measured any Li-ion packs so I cannot talk about them, but laptop battery packs do have balancing circuitry and are Li-ion. I'm looking forward to your DIY Pack measurements.

Drive 40mph, steer right or left, pull handbrake, steer to opposite side while flooring the throttle. Thats how you drift those cells. 🙂

Is the other guy your brother?!

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Christophe HUBERT says:

Jehu, why didn't you measure the yellow cells underneath? The Winston ones

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Covert says:

How do you get a shooting job like that? That must be so fun!

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Frank says:

Jehu, the reason why the Tesla pack is not apparently drifting, is mainly due to it's construction. They might be capacity matched, but the more important thing here is the number of cells in parallel. One single cell represents a small amount of the total capacity. Every cell can wander up or down a bit relative to another, they tend to cancel themselves out. This tends to work very well when the cells are well matched and the exact same type and age. Now, if you have a very small number of cells in each string, say 1, a BMS can be extremely important. If one cell looses capacity faster than another, it can mean your total pack voltage looks good, but when discharged low a cell is WAY low.
