Those are some very good observations about that strange model 3 motor… The S&X induction motor should be pretty good when coasting idle – the slippage is also great for high torque from standstill – I still don't get that reluctance concept, and how it can beat efficiency and cost targets!?

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars david pearn says:

Is slip akin to stretching the field to it’s limits?.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ruirodtube says:

Model 3 motor is very efficient thanks to their inductance motor with Halbach array
Time to install that on a Model S

give that guy a whiteboard. btw one of the best table conversation 🙂

WTF? All they use is a synchronous motor, which is an alternator. You use DC in the armature to create the field and 3 phase AC in the stator.

You vary the speed with the 3 phase frequency and change the synchronous pole angle with the DC to adjust for the dynamic torque (load).

When you want to regenerative brake (generate power) you increase the DC field and adjust the 3 phase frequency with the travel speed.

Honestly you need to do some more research. Your experts are speculating with minimal knowledge.

A synchronous motor is what is in your power station and has been around since the year dot. Nothing new. Your guys should know that. No need for permanent magnets, that is why you have a battery in a car. Its for the alternator and starter motor.

    who's this guy…. ??
he has pretty amazing details about motors…

I was thinking aircore PM and ACIM together. Aircore PM works well for DIY wind turbines at decent power. No cogging, no eddy losses.

    Foods cold now jehu

I'm a car guy, and I like wrenching on my 2005 civic. Listening to you guys talk about electric motors though, sounds like I need to start learning about electronics rather than internal combustion engines. Really interesting!

He probably should have said this After his now cold meal ? Interesting though…

Your bus needs an alternator grafted in somewhere. To regain some more electrical losses..

Feed in whilst you're using, in other words, reduce your losses to gain efficiency.

    Otmar is a fantastic explainer.
