In my city the trolley busses are pretty common. We call them the "trólebus" because we just took the English term and made it Brazilian Portuguese.

Back in the '70s, I rode the electric buses (top connected like SF) around HelL.A. Do the cable cars still run in SF? I rode those, and got to see the huge 1873 electric motor which drove the cable for those things. Awesome! // My niece got married in the redwood grove at Berzerkeley. Pictures just don't do those justice. Looks like you had a nice trip. Cool.

To answer your question on "why isn't every city doing this? The answer is… every city was going it until the 1950s. The height of electric streetcars were in the 1920s however the great depression put a lot of trolley companies out of business. WW2 put a pause on the abandoned on the trolleys. However in the 1950s. A company called "national city lines" owned by general motors, Firestone tires, and standard oil. Bought trolley services and converted them to buses using (guess what). Diesel GM buses, Firestone tires and standard oil.

The reason you don't have em everywhere is the infrastructure costs are high for the wires, the overhead kit could be seen as an eye sore, you have to put height restrictions on vehicles entering the city amongst many reason. That's why wireless charging is the new craze.

who really cares about such cables.
Are we all walking looking upwards the whole day …?
ignoring the benefit of less dust dirt and smoke, better life quality …???

Jehu, thanks for this! I grew up in Germany in the 70s and those buses were everywhere. Clean and efficient! Wish they had them in my city now, they make so much more sense.

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Cromulent Commodore says:

you know there's a guy who put some of those trolley poles on his Prius and hacked into MUNI power.
and Germany is starting to use overhead wires for big rig trucks. "eclectic highway" they call it.

The first Tram you take Is the "Carrelli" (or Type 1928). Is the classic tram of Milan in the original colours and interiors. And even today are still in use
