Robert Llewellyn is a British actor, presenter and writer, famous for his thirty-year stretch as the rubber-masked mechanoid Kryten in the much-loved science fiction comedy, ‘Red Dwarf’. With his interest in engineering, Robert then turned his hand to presenting the long-running TV gameshow, ‘Scrapheap Challenge’ and also ‘How Do They Do It?’ and ‘Carpool’. In 2010, after being blown away by early Electric Cars, Robert launched Fully Charged, a YouTube channel focussing on the future of electric vehicles, of all shapes and sizes, and clean energy. Fully Charged has exceeded 55 million views around the world and Robert was recently acknowledged as ‘Tech Legend’ at the T3 Awards.

What Austin Texas?!? That was our thoughts from 2019. Then we met the locals in the audience and they all had 100% renewable energy feeding their houses from the grid (or had the option to buy such)!!! We almost fell out of our chairs. Who knew?

Two things to think about in V2G is disconnecting from the grid so that you don't fry an electrician who is trying to get the grid up and running. The other thing is that you need to have your own ground since the ground in the grid will not be available during off grid use.

In the late 1990's I got talking to an American in a London park. He told me about how his friend in California had installed rooftop solar & batteries, raised two kids & hadn't had a power bill in 20yrs. If that's not what an early adopter looks like I don't know what is; solar panels in those days weren't cheap or as efficient.

I can't remember their names but you'd have to ask Zac & Jesse Cataldo of Now You Know YouTube renown for them; there's a couple of blokes who converted a RV type van to electric & have a solar array that extends out when parked with the assistance of a small either USA or Canadian company who specialises in EV conversions. Their aim is to demonstrate the possibilities of solar & EV's by driving from Alaska to Patagonia; they're making a film about it, got a YouTube channel and (don't quote me on this – writing a book). One of them is from Australia. Last time I heard anything about their odyssey they'd reached Mexico. No idea how COVID-19 has impacted their progress.

Watching this discussion, the US is sleeping while others build the future. Here in RI we have the country's first offshore wind farm (only 5 turbines), online for several years, still the only one in the US.

In Auckland New Zealand, I remember going to visit relatives (we lived on a farm 400 miles away) & it was a treat to go into town. Central Auckland of the time was very well served by trams and trolley buses. My grandfather was a tram driver.

Whenever I say to people that I think that average EV car owners will keep their cars for between 15 – 20yrs because the batteries are lasting far longer than anyone anticipated, I get laughed off of the internet. But Jehu's comments surrounding his EV conversion seems to validate my theory.

Oh no Jehu, you may want to link to the various things discussed and timeline please

Jehu there is an Australian doing a trip from Alaska to Argentina in a 100% solar powered camper van. He started about 2 years ago its called Route Del Sol on you tube.

I flew to the Austin event from Detroit and it was a great weekend! I'm looking forward to the next one but I can wait until it's safe.
