This week I went out to a VW show in Jerome, Arizona. Up in the mountain there's an old mining town, so along with about 500 VW Buses we all camped out and checked out the Mining Museum. While I was looking thru all the stuff, I stumbled upon this 1902 Studebaker Electric Car. It's amazing to think that over 100 years ago, this technology already existed. It seems like studebaker was headed in the right direction, but I guess down the road the combustion engine, probably with the help of the oil industry, won that battle and electric car progress was abandoned.

In 1981, I was at the Studebaker International Meet in Gettysburg, PA as a parts vendor. I man came in with a 1902 Studebaker Electric that wouldn't run. My friend Dave and I went to his farm, close by and got it running. I was the first to drive it in a long time. Last tag was in 1958. The next day he brought it back to the meet and I drove it again with my wife and then daughter, then 13. What a thrill to drive this old of a car. Along with a friend, Dave and I wrote an article for the Studebaker Drivers Club magazine, Turning Wheels in Sept 1981. The car was sold and went to England. I have lost track of it. The car was #157, model 1355. I would love to know where it is today. Jim G.
